Christingle Service on Sunday 20th December

This year we will celebrate Christingle as part of our main act of worship next Sunday, 20th December. Volunteers are needed to make the Christingles on Saturday, 19th December from 10:30 to 12:00 hours. Please sign the list at the back of the church and come to help with the task - many hands make light work! It would also be helpful to have a volunteer to purchase the oranges, if you can do this please speak to the Revd Anne.
  Bishop of Kensington's Visit.

The new Bishop of Kensington, Paul Williams, visited St Francis of Assisi and took part in the Sunday service. The Bishop of Kensington, who is responsible for one quarter of London including this parish, helps the Bishop of London to fulfil his mission in the capital. The congregation were delighted to be honoured in such a manner. Afterwards, the Bishop stayed for tea with the congregation.

How do I deal with debt?

Many people are facing financial difficulties at the present time. It is difficult to know what to do sometimes and what we see and hear do not make it easy to know what can be done. However, there are some simple things that each person can do in order to take control of their personal financial situation. If you are experiencing a period of financial difficulty or have found yourself with debts and do not know what to do here are a few suggestions.

Do not panic and get stressed out, and do not ignore the problem.

Always seek independent money advice before borrowing money to pay off any debts or taking out a loan secured against your home.

Check whether your payments are covered by insurance.

Make sure that you are claiming all the benefits and tax credits that you are entitled to.

Tackle your priority debts first – your tax, mortgage and other secured loans.

Work out how much you can afford to pay to all your creditors, whether it is a lump sum or regular payments. Then get in touch with them straight away to discuss the situation.

A useful contact is the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, a charity providing free information and impartial advice on a wide range of financial services. Call 0808 138 1111 (8am – 8pm) or visit their website at www.cccs.co.uk

Don’t ever be too embarrassed to speak confidentially to one of the clergy. Lawrence and Anne are available to listen.

Every second Sunday of the month after Mass the congregation shares lunch together.  There is a rota of volunteers from the congregation who offer to cook the lunch.  The meal provides an opportunity for everyone to relax together and to welcome visitors and newcomers.   A contribution of £3 is invited to cover the cost of the meal, which includes a main course, a dessert and a glass of wine.

The London Launch of Message in the Sand, held at the Philippine Embassy’s Rizal Room on the 27th February 2009, was attended by members of the Filipino and international community, as well as by the Philippines media.  It was formally opened by His Excellency Ambassador Edgardo B. Espiritu and graced by Mr. Miguel Palomares, Director of the Maritime Environment Division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.  In his message, Ambassador Espiritu congratulated Ms. Aserappa for her gentle reminder to us all to take care of the environment, as seen through the eyes of a child.  For his part, Mr. Palomares said that aside from his official duties, it has also become his personal conviction to call on everybody to be staunch supporters of environmental conservation.

During the launch, Ms. Aserappa, author of the international bestseller In a Japanese Garden, shared her inspiring message about how Message in the Sand came to be and thanked CANVAS for inviting her to write a children’s book about the environment.

Philippine-based Atty. Gigo Alampay of CANVAS was represented by Ms. Ivee Olivares-Mellor, a Filipino artist based in Sussex.

Framed prints of some of the illustrations of Filipino artist Roel Obemio were displayed in the Rizal Room and the reception room during the Launch. Roel, illustrator and designer for Disney Productions, has won the Grand Prize for Painting  in the Philippines.

Message in the Sand is set in one of the islands of the Philippines.  Miguel, the Filipino boy and the hero of the story, is triumphant in ensuring that his message to save the seas is communicated in order to preserve the environment.

The book was first launched by CANVAS on 27th November 2008, at a sell-out exhibition at the Ayala Museum in Makati, Philippines, exactly three months before its London Launch.  Since then, Message in the Sand has received excellent reviews, as below:

"Charmingly told...a touching story...a legitimate bestseller...destined to become a classic. Message in the Sand was greeted with favorable reviews and hailed as an inspiration for budding eco-warriors” Philstar.com U.S.A

The Launch was done within the ambit of the Philippines’ commitment to maritime safety, the environment, and sustainable development. The Philippine Embassy expressed its delight to be partners with CANVAS Publishing, in its efforts to promote Philippine art, culture, and the environment.

I loved MESSAGE IN THE SAND, both the story and the pictures: simply but powerfully told, boldly and beautifully illustrated.”
